Learn More About Sea Island in Richmond, BC
Each year close to 18 million people set foot on the City of Richmond’s Sea Island in the Fraser River estuary, yet surprisingly, the island is a permanent residence to only a few hundred homeowners. The reson for this is that Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Canada’s second busiest airport, is found on Sea Island. This region has also dedicated over 100 acres for preservation of natural habitat in the Sea Island Conservation Area. The Sturgeon Bank Wildlife Management Area is committed to marine life protection along the island’s west banks. Well-loved and rugged MacDonald and Iona Beaches are also found on Sea Island.
The few hundred people who do live on Sea Island reside in the very unique community of Burkeville. Single family homes were planned and built during WWII to house employees at aeronautics-related factories on Sea Island. After the war, the houses were offered to our veterans. Separated from commercial businesses and other residential areas of the city, Burkeville is a neighbourhood in the true sense of the word. Sea Island is situated just south of Vancouver in Richmond’s northwest region.
Sea Island has seen an increase in construction in the recent past. The state-of-the-art environmentally sustainable BCIT Aerospace Campus opened in 2007. A newly constructed high-end open air designer outlet mall at YVR is expected to open in 2015.
